Carl L. Backus, Groton florist who died June 21, left the majority of his estate, formally valued in excess of $15,000, to his wife, Alta M. Backus. This bequest included household effects and stock in the First National Bank of New York, First Securities Corporation and the Guaranty Trust Company of New York. To the Congregational Church of Groton Mr. Backus willed $1,000 for current church expenses.

The unique specifications in Mr. Backus' will concerned the disposal of $500 by the Groton Rural Cemetery Association. For the upkeep and maintenance of the C. L. Backus, C. L. Shaw and R. B. Shaw double lot. the "Association shall purchase, plant and if necessary replace on the grave of each adult person one hybrid tea rose, either white or pink, and shall purchase and plant on the grave of each adult person in each year one feverfew and three white or pink geraniums; the Association shall purchase and plant each year upon each grave in which a baby may be burled, one feverfew and one pink and one white geranium; the Association shall cause each grave to be spaded each year, kept free from weeds and well watered." Executors of the Backus will are his widow and his daughter, Mrs Ruth B.Denton.
